My work as an artist is an attempt to investigate and visually understand the substance of Nature, as it is articulated in various belief systems and especially in scientific theories. I am intrigued that the human brain, originally a simple microbial organism, has come such a long way. It has provided the means for attributing spiritual and material meaning to the world in which we live. It is a process that has inspired us to seek an understanding of the nature of the universe, from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. My work is informed by many fields of scientific inquiry, including chemistry, oceanography, seismology, astronomy and biology among others.
Science has influenced my thinking as well as the visual investigations that underlie my work. I am particularly interested in how we have come to rationalize our place in the universe. My fascination with the evolution of our brains has led me to think about how it is possible that a scientific hypothesis, based on mathematical computations, can provide a basis for understanding the fabric of the cosmos! How have mathematics and geometry contributed to my understanding of the universe? Why is it that the birth of a star or a galaxy starts in mega-explosion?
My work, over time, has come to focus on cosmology. But I also appreciate that today, as we are bombarded by data from myriad sources of information, it is beyond our human abilities to take it all in. My paintings represent attempts to process this data. The product is the iconography that defines my work. I want to tell stories based on the evolution of human beings and the evolution of human thinking that have shaped the perceptions of the world in which we live.
